Bear Tree Stand Hunter Behaviour
Black bears have exceptional senses of smell and they have very good eyesight and hearing as well. When hunting black bears from a tree stand there are a few basic rules to avoid getting detected. If a bear detects your presence at the bait site, it probably won't hit the bait. So here are some things to keep in mind when bear hunting with us in Ontario Canada.
Smaller bears are easier to harvest than bigger bears because the bigger bears are smarter and have gone through several hunting seasons. If you want a big bear, you have to outsmart it with a perfectly executed hunt. The slightest unnatural sight, smell or sound can discourage it from hitting the bait.
Things to Remember While In a Bear Hunting Tree Stand
Do not bring or drink alcohol while hunting. Even the smell of alcohol on your breath can be smelled a kilometer away.
Do not smoke cigarettes, pipes, cigars or joints. These smokes will stink up a bait site for hours.
Do not shower with soap! Smell natural. No deodorants. Until you have a bear, smell natural.
No radios, ipods or sound devices of any kind.
Move slowly and be prepared to shoot at all times. Don't expect your camouflaged clothing sufficient enough to avoid detection.
Urinate in an empty water bottle and take it out with you.

Black Bear Trashed Bait Stand
This bear bait stand was severely trashed. We suspect a fierce battle between bruins took place here for control of the daily bait. This bait site will have to be relocated to a bigger tree nearby as the bears tore down the last one and dug the roots right out. The tree stand where the hunter will sit is situated in a versatile enough position to accomodate several good shooting opportunities. We pick a names for all of our bait stands in order to make it easier for us to remember which one is which. This bait stand has a new name: the Terror Bait.
Bear Bait Stand Construction
Last year, in the fall hunt of 2005, we had 85% success rate with our hunters harvesting their black bears. Every year we find the most accessible and densest populated bear areas, build new stands, encourage the biggest bears to take control of the bait and keep the baits active until the hunters arrive.
We decided we wanted to show the whole story of a successful bear hunt from beginning to end. It all starts with finding the bears. This is fairly easy as our area seems to be in a black bear population rise again. This is both a good and a bad thing. Good for the hunters, bad for the farmers. We found a really good site that seems to be getting hit by at least two different bears at this time, both apparently female. We suspect that a male is coming around but haven't seen any signs of it in the last two weeks. This particular bear bait site is a perfect place to install a hunter. It has a nice 120 foot clearing from the tree stand to the bait. The bears' tails to the stand are clearly evident. They come in along the tree line and directly to the bait. A hunter should have approximately ten seconds for a clear shot. Two different bears have been seen at the bait. One is a female with at least one cub and the other is a long bear but substantially thinner than the female mother. It also exhibits female characteristics but could be a boar. Either way, from a distance of 50 meters the bears appear to top the three hundred pound mark easy.
This is the whole story from beginning to end of a successful trophy bear hunt. There is still about a month to go before the bear hunting begins in this part of Ontario Canada so we may be able to attract even bigger animals by then. We are hoping to finish this story with a trophy bear and a happy hunter.
The remains of the bait bag hang on the tree again this morning.
The repeated hit means Rod is building a tree stand here.
This will make a perfect place for a bear hunter tree stand.
ifred climbed the tree to verify the line of sight. Nice view.
Kim drops by to see how the bear stand preparation is coming along.
ifred weed-whacking a path for the hunter to the tree stand.
Rod is securing the tree stand platform where the hunter will sit.
This is a drive in bear hunting site.
Rod refreshes the bait before we head out.
That's just about it for now. We replace the bait everyday to keep the bears interested and wait for the bear hunters to show up.Saturday, July 22, 2006
500 Pounds Plus Trophy Black Bear Hunts
Northern Ontario is home to some of the largest black bears in Canada. Every year we seem to be able to bring hunters to bait stands that get taken over by trophy size bruins. Hunters frequently can get opportunities to see 500 + lbs black bears in these Canadian woods. The James Bay Frontier of Northern Ontario Canada has one of the densest bear populations in the country. We manage our bait stands within our bear management unit, BMU, so as to get several wanting to control the food source. We maintain only the hardest hit baits, abandoning those we can't guarantee regular hits. This fall, come hunt in a well-manager unit with World Class Black Bear Outfitters that have been bringing hunters to trophy bears successfully for the last thirty five years.
Stay at Lillabelle Lake Resort and take advantage of the superb pike fishing. Our all-inclusive bear hunting packages include use of a boat and motor, great home-cooked lodge styled meals, lakeside units totally self-contained with kitchenettes.

Bear Bait Sites Getting Hit
I see i-Fred has the black bear hunts blog activated again. It's about time, we have been out and baiting the bruins all month already. Last minute fall hunters better hurry up and start finalizing their booking. If other outfitters in the "good" zone are getting responses like us then there can't be very many trophy opportunities left. We're not offering many more hunts this year. We have about twenty-five hunters who have already have submitted deposits. The idea of developing a few more active bait stands in our bear area is feasible for last minute seekers but you better hurry up and speak now as the start of the hunt nears its one month deadline.
Our James Bay frontier bear management unit is fully up and running. Two new tree stands are being built this year.
Usually we are bear baiting everyday, weather conditions permitting. The baits are being hit 90% of the time already with a total of 23 stands activated. This morning we only needed to do the Kennedy 6 and all of them were hit.
Judging by the evidence, we suspect more than one 500+ pounders has been coming around and maybe we will get a chance to harvest another trophy bear this fall.
So, don't hesitate to call me directly, Rod from Lillabelle Lake Resort 1-888-494-5344 if you need more details.
We think we have one of the best success rates around and we've been outfitters in Northern Ontario Canada for over 30 years. It takes both offering good chances to get a trophy black bear and a well managed population to become one of Canada's expert hunting guides.
