Black bears have exceptional senses of smell and they have very good eyesight and hearing as well. When hunting black bears from a tree stand there are a few basic rules to avoid getting detected. If a bear detects your presence at the bait site, it probably won't hit the bait. So here are some things to keep in mind when bear hunting with us in Ontario Canada.
Smaller bears are easier to harvest than bigger bears because the bigger bears are smarter and have gone through several hunting seasons. If you want a big bear, you have to outsmart it with a perfectly executed hunt. The slightest unnatural sight, smell or sound can discourage it from hitting the bait.
Things to Remember While In a Bear Hunting Tree Stand
Do not bring or drink alcohol while hunting. Even the smell of alcohol on your breath can be smelled a kilometer away.
Do not smoke cigarettes, pipes, cigars or joints. These smokes will stink up a bait site for hours.
Do not shower with soap! Smell natural. No deodorants. Until you have a bear, smell natural.
No radios, ipods or sound devices of any kind.
Move slowly and be prepared to shoot at all times. Don't expect your camouflaged clothing sufficient enough to avoid detection.
Urinate in an empty water bottle and take it out with you.
